there seems to never be enough time...

I am sitting in my apartment studying for my first mid-term in Chile. The structure of the test is really favourable. You can bring all materials and notes from the course to the test and if you are not happy with your score you may answer the test questions at home, hand them in one week later and the hand-in will represent 40% of you grade on the test (60% being covered by your actual testgrade). Therefore I am not that worried about it and rather let my studies float away in some unfocused surfing. Found this really interesting internet vision of the future when reading the latest report from trendwatching. How will the internet look like in 5000 days? Listen to internet guru Kevin Kelly's thoughts on this. I will not comment this right now but save it for my next comment in marketing class due in one week. This marketing course is getting to me, opening my eyes for the possibilities and potential the net, really interesting...

By the way, thank you everybody reading this blog and showing appreciation for it! I did not know there were that many readers, but several persons have approached me and commented on the blog which brings me great joy. Please continue doing so!

This time I wanted to take a break in my studies (and unfocused surfing) to write about how I always think I am short of time in my life. When living in Sweden I had a lot of things to do all the time, work and studies so it felt natural to be a bit stressed and sometimes barely have time to keep in touch with all friends. One would think that going on exchange and being abroad would give you much more sparetime. Before coming to Santiago I was picturing myself hanging around in cafés, reading books, watching movies, just killing time as it would be so chilled. Instead I am finding myself a little stressed as always. I don't seem to manage to have time to write e-mails and travelreports to all my friends back home in Sweden, and this is now, when 2 of my courses have not started yet!!! Sorry everybody back home that are wondering how I am doing, the reports, pictures and e-mails are on the way, I promise!

I don't know if any of my fellow exchange students or people reading this that have been on exchange recognize themselves in my situation. I don't know how time just manages to fly by and I get more and more guilt over not mailing and keeping everybody back home updated. I guess in my case efficiency comes with a time-constraint. I do actually have more spare time here than I had back home but I sleep more here in Santiago, spend more time checking out facebook and lack the same efficiency in arranging small things or just things like going to the gym... I also think not having the same routines and organization as back home makes it harder to organize my life. I remeber having the same feeling when me and my friend Jens were travelling for 5 months in South America. We had a very relaxed schedule and even so the e-mails and reports back home did not come that often as I would like them to come, giving me that same kind of stressed feeling. In that case we really had a lot of sparetime (only sparetime to be honest) but the lack of routines in your environment makes it harder to organize it.

The worst with becoming late with the reports is that for every day that goes by, the things you want to tell in that report increase almost exponentially (at least it feels in that way) so the barrier to overcome with that first report just grows and grows.

Anyway, need to get back to some studies now so I eventually, hopefully get time for those travelreports :). Not being that worried about the exam I rather look forward to the week-end. Party tonight and saturday, and on sunday its time for Chile - Brasil. Its gonna be such an experience watching that game live at Estadio Nacional and to see Brasil's best squad live, can't wait! Tonight there is a party organized by some committee at the school for exchange students and their friends. Can such a party ever turn out to be fun? I doubt it, my previous experiences are not that good and I know some other people going tonight also have their doubts. I will try to go to the party with an open mind but it is hard, I mean would I ever go to a party of this kind back home??? But maybe tonight is the night?

how friendship begins

Finally done with my marketing homework for tomorrow. You can read it below if you understand spanish (or more specifically understand my spanish with lots of mistakes ;) ). The reading was pretty interesting - the first 5 chapters in a book called Long Tail (check out the link for a description of the concept). I find the example of the firm Lulu really interesting, how to connect producers and buyers of niche products. This opens my mind for some new business ideas...

This week-end I went with Bernard, Tim and Patrick from uni for a small two-day excursion into Chiles central valley. We did some hiking (or barely, it was a one hour walk) and wine-tasting. To be honest most of the time was spent in our rented car cruising around the landscape, but we had a really good time and ticked of a lot of places on the map.

Going abroad alone means putting yourself in a position where you have to make new friends and be very social. I find this part of going on exchange as really fun and interesting. Back home you have so many old friends that you barely have time to keep in touch with all of them, never the less find any new friends, but going abroad this forces you to be that social person connecting with a lot of new people.

I believe meeting new friends in this way passes through certain phases. Coming on exchange you are open to everybody and try to make as many connections as possible. Then you start hanging out more and more with those people you feel you have the most in common with. What I believe though really builds friendship are the internal jokes and stories. Those things that happen when you are spending time together and that you can always fall back upon as a pillar in your friendship. It also unfortunately shuts other people out of a group and the more internal jokes and stories you have the harder the group will be to penetrate for outsiders. That is why trips like this week-end are so important. You get to know each other much better than before when hanging out constantly for 2 days and you start having a common ground of internal jokes and stories binding you together.

The internal joke concept is extremely evident in the case of my group of friends from the SSE. After hanging out very closely for around four years now the amount internal jokes, comments and stories is so vast that it is almost impossible for anybody to get in to the group. It is almost impossible for ourselves to keep track of all the nicknames and jokes. What is good with it though is that it has almost created a fear of missing out from common events. You do not want to miss a big dinner party, a trip or not even a lunch of fear of loosing out on the latest stories or not knowing what the internal jokes come from. This makes the group even tighter as you can always count on people making an effort to get together and see each other when the opportunity arises...

Enough with the blogging for now. Going eating at a Chilean restaurant (that means a lot of meat) with Ari my roomie (and apartment owner) and his friend that is here visiting us...

The long tail - la opportunidad del intermediario

back to reality x 2

Reality check nr 1. You actually have to study in Chile too..-

after a good weekend it was back to reality yesterday when I had to finish a homework for my "medio ambiente" class, environmental economics. It felt like being straight back at SSE. I didn't understand anything, had to halfguess on the questions and sat until really late. This combined with it being Chile so that I today found out at class that the problemset is due thursday not today and through some questions regarding the problemset I understood half of my responses were wrong and that I have to redo it. Sucks...

Reality Check nr 2. A bit more serious....
I just saw a documentary about US prisonercamps in Afghanistan, Iraq and Guantanamo and the way US military treats prisoners of war. Scary. It is called Taxi to the dark side. US military currently has hold around 85 000 prisoners of war in custodyand none of them have yet been put to trail or at least had an initial hearing. They also use interrogation methods that clearly could be seen as torture and not in-line with the Geneva Convention...

Sniffing up the sneezers...

more interesting lectures like yesterday please...

So yesterday was second class in my marketing course. I am finding the course really interesting. The teacher keeps leeds the class in a relaxed and interesting manner. Yesterdays lecture ended up in being a speech for the students of "Catolica" to take care of the opportunity life has given them and to not only take the career path usually set for business students - pursuing the corporate career - but to consider investing and believing in what they are interested in and to dare to try the path of innovation and following their own ideas. It is interesting to see that Business schools here in Chile are facing the same problems as SSE back home, seeing far to many bright entrepreneurial minds drowning in the nondynamical and bureaucratic organizational structures of the big corporate firms. It is also always as inspiring to meet those few tutors that dare to question this and promote an alternative career path.

During this discussion about innovation came also maybe the funniest comment during the whole lecture. The teacher was explaining how good innovations (illustrated by a DJ that with his mixes constructs something new, as opposed to invention illustrated by the professor in the movie Back to the future) always represented a trip of an item, idea or trend, from the alternative ways how a society acts to the mainstream. So an innovator who sees a need for something and mixes two existing things in society creating an innovation will be succesfull when it turns mainstream. And while using examples from the music industry the teacher ended the speech with the comment "and then when you are mainstream, you either snort coke til' you die or donate your money to something good" (freely translated). A sharp and subtle conclusion to an interesting theme that at least helps me getting more interested in the lectures.

I wish we had more lectures like this back home. Or maybe we do, I have just been enrolled in all the boring courses, like listening to old men explaining how different accounting items should be treated in the DCF model. I am so happy I never have to do that again...
